ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems): What You Need to Know

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) is a general term for the technology used in yours and many other vehicles you see on the road today. These systems have an important purpose, which we discuss in the next few paragraphs.

What is the Purpose of ADAS?

When you consider that most road collisions are caused by human error, 94% to be exact, doesn’t it make sense to find a way to take human error out of driving? If technology steps in when humans are unable to react, the roads are a lot safer for you and your family.

Below, we’ll explain fourteen of the most common ADAS systems in vehicles today. Each one serves an important purpose, which we will explain as well. All of the systems below operate by using global positioning satellites, cameras, RADAR, SONAR, and LiDAR. When working together these technologies can do amazing things.

Passive ADAS Systems

The following systems are considered passive because they simply alert the driver to the issue or potential hazard. It’s still up to the driver to act to avoid disaster.

ABS - Anti-Lock Braking Systems

ABS is the system that stops the vehicle from skidding or turning when the emergency brake is applied. The emergency brakes would be applied if your primary brakes were to fail.

ESC - Electronic Stability Control

There are times when a driver may over or under-steer. ESC helps the vehicle maintain stability. This system is good when there are hazardous weather conditions.

TCS - Traction Control System

TCS utilizes both ABS and ESC to help the vehicle maintain traction, which is helpful to the driver when they’re trying to navigate curves.

Back-up Camera

The backup camera is one of the best ADAS systems invented. This system alone has helped millions of drivers avoid collisions since it was put into practice.

LDW - Lane Departure Warning

Drivers get drowsy and they also get distracted. When this happens they tend to swerve into the lane next to them. Before LDW that driver either got lucky and noticed or caused a crash. Now, LDW warns the driver before they get too far over.

FCW - Forward Collision Warning

Things like deer jump out in front of our vehicles. FCW will alert you when something unexpected appears.

Blind Spot Detection

All drivers have a blind spot, it’s a human trait. This technology solves this issue. As you may have guessed, it alerts the driver when it detects something in their blind spot.

Parking Assistance

Parking isn’t easy for some, and this system helps out when drivers are unsure of their parking abilities.

Active ADAS Systems
The following systems are considered active because the technology will take action without any contribution from the driver.

Automatic Emergency Braking

If there is something in the road ahead of the vehicle, and the driver doesn’t respond by braking, this system will kick in and apply the brakes

Emergency Steering

When something is in the road this system will steer the car out of the way to avoid it.

Adaptive Cruise Control

This system works like regular cruise control where it allows the driver to take their foot off the pedal, but it also matches the speed of traffic and will slow down or speed up depending on the need.

Lane Keeping Assist and Lane-Centering

This system will steer the vehicle so it stays in the middle of the lane.

Traffic Jam Assist

Stop-and-go traffic is stressful, but this system uses adaptive cruise control and Lane Keeping Assist to take all the anxiety out of it.

Self Parking

If you hate parking, this system will do it for you. Its precision is astounding and you’ll wonder why you ever tried to parallel park on your own.

ADAS Calibration

When you have ADAS in your vehicle, a ton of the technology is embedded into the windshield. So, if you have a chip or crack, it could obstruct an important sensor. When you have your windshield replaced, it will need an ADAS calibration. The process is simple and doesn’t take too long. Besides, without it, all that life-saving technology won’t work.
