Windshield Rock Chips: Repair or Replace?

We think it’s safe to say that most people reading this blog have experienced a rock hitting their windshield while driving. It’s a scary sound that often leaves us shaken, but our windshield is crack-free. Then, there are times when a rock moving at the speed of a 75 MPH tire leaves a chip.

If you’re still reading, we think it’s safe to say that you have a chip in your windshield that some random rock left there. Now you have to have the windshield replaced. Or so you might think. What if we told you, there’s a possibility that the chip can be repaired instead of removing and replacing the entire windshield?

Well, there is. Keep reading to learn more.

It Comes Down to the Size

The size of the damage will be the first thing to dictate whether or not the chip in your windshield can be repaired or if you need a full replacement. Some auto glass experts believe any damage larger than a quarter is too large for repair and other professionals will try to do what they can to repair before replacing.

Depth Is Important

You may be aware of this, and you may not, but it’s worth mentioning that windshields are not just one piece of glass. They’re an amalgamation of thinner sheets of glass that form into one. This is done for several reasons, one being the technology that’s embedded into it for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

The depth of the chip needs to be assessed as well because it could interfere with some of the technology.

Location. Location. Location.

Where is the rock chip located? Is it on the passenger side? Toward the top? Or did that rock land smack dab into the middle of the driver’s sight line? The location of that chip is going to make a difference when the auto glass technician evaluates whether or not you can repair that chip or if your vehicle will need a full windshield replacement.

What’s More Cost-Effective?

If the chip can be repaired it’s much more cost-effective to do that instead of replacing the entire windshield. The average cost of a chip repair can range between $65 and $95, depending on the chip.

You’re Insurance Might Cover It

If you have comprehensive coverage then odds are your insurance will cover the cost of your repair. But in some cases, you may have to meet the deductible so be aware of that and check your policy.

Time Is Of The Essence

A small rock chip may not seem like a big deal, and you may be tempted to put off having it repaired because you want to use that money for something else. We understand that, but it’s important to know that chips become cracks, and cracks become bigger, and once the damage is too large to repair, a full replacement will cost much more.
